2020 KC Open: A Griffith Double

2020 KC Open: A Griffith Double

The shortened version of the Kansas City Open ran smooth this past Saturday at Kactus Creek Croquet Club and the event saw Matt Griffith and Ellie Griffith defend their home court. The Pro and Gold Divisions started together in an open bracket with losers from round one moving into a Gold playoff. Winners in that round advanced in the Pro Playoff and faced off against the top four seeds -- all of whom had a bye in the first round. The quarterfinals produced a lot of excitment as two the top seeds were upset.

9WS Career Records Update

Over the years, the MCA generated a lot of statistics through the Nine Wicket Series with all games being recorded and tracked for each points race. Working with Darin Watson, we started in 2017 to shift from spreadsheet records to an actual lightweight database. That concluded last fall and it now presents the opportunity to present a deeper set of statistics for players and fans. It also allows us to offer new stats like net and will help with updating the 9W Index more often.

Era of Domination Continues

Matt Griffith put an exclamation point on his fourth straight MCA Pro Nine Wicket Series win as he took me down 26-24 in yesterday's final at the 2018 MCA Championship at Kactus Creek Croquet Club in Parkville, Missouri.

In reality, Griffith had pretty much claimed the 9WS Series by the time the final started as he held a 30-point lead at the start of the game. I did make a go of it with an out-game approach with blue, but it didn't take Griffith long to get in and wrap up the Cup chase by taking yellow through wicket #3.

Ellie Griffith Sweeps Gold Division at 2018 MCA Championship

Ellie Griffith won her first MCA Championship tournament on the way to placing first in the 2018 MCA Nine Wicket Series Gold Division points race.

Executing a series of immaculate roll-up shots and long, accurate split shots, Griffith cruised to a 27-12 victory against runner-up Brevin Millican.

Similar to her performance at the KC Open on the same court six weeks ago, Griffith broke through to the double wickets on the far side of the court with some ease while her opponent struggled to advance his balls past wicket three during the early phase of the game.

Proposed Club-City Championship

To better promote and support club play in the area, the Nine Wicket Series stats committee has been developing a Club-City points race to accompany the current singles points races. The concept is to award points to clubs based on how members place in 9WS tournaments. Because not every player is part of an official club, points for those players are rewarded to the city on their membership form.
