Click for FlyerLast year, Madminton attracted more than 100 two-person teams. This year, Attendees can expect food trucks, local craft beer and spirits, live music and special goodie bags for each player. Madminton is a round-robin-style tournament that will guarantee each two-person team gets a lot of play time. Attendees of this part-badminton, part-lawn party and part-fundraiser are encouraged to dress up or dress down. Costumes are encouraged.

“Yard games are a trend right now and badminton is an icon to Kansas City thanks to the Nelson-Atkins Sculpture Garden,” said Sandbox Principal Ethan Whitehill. “We thought, let’s marry the two and put a twist on this that will attract the vibrant, active professional population of Kansas City and thus Madminton, a game of mad skills meets good will, was born.”

Madminton will benefit  Giving the Basics, which provides the necessities of life not covered by government assistance programs to underserved families in Kansas City. These necessary items include personal care products such as soap, shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper and other hygiene staples. So far this year, the event has already raised more than $65,000 in sponsorship support for Giving the Basics.

“Our recent boom in young professional transplants coupled with Kansas City’s strong philanthropic history really got us thinking,” said Whitehill. “We have an opportunity to align Giving the Basics with a literally new community segment, as well as tap into our tried and true supporters.”
